Cholla Lights

Cholla Lights

One day I will wake up to this view! Cholla Lights is at the location of my future home and studio in Carefree. We recently purchased a property with the most beautiful views of “Boulder Pile” from the front, as this painting depicts, and we have Black Mountain for the back view. The area is full of giant Saguaros, Palo Verde and Mesquite trees, several varieties of cholla and cacti, along with blooming desert bushes and wonderful wildlife. We have been out daydreaming often along with photographing and exploring, we even spent an evening on the roof celebrating with a bottle of wine checking out our future elevated views! Recently I set up an easel and captured this scene in plein air (painting on location). What I was most drawn to was the light caught by the chollas with  the wonderful shadow and light patterns and the stunning boulder back-drop . The path mysteriously beckons you to follow and find out where it leads. I then used it as a study to paint this larger and more complete version in my studio.

Right now there is an older home that has been stripped on the property. Hopefully within the year we will be able to start meeting with architects and begin the slow process of a full blown remodel. I look forward to creating my studio and attached gallery and somewhere down the road being a host studio for the Hidden in the Hills Studio Tour event each year.
