A Place to Land

Butterflies have long mesmerized me. I am drawn to their delicate beauty and the profound symbolism they carry—transformation, resilience, and the ability to leave difficult seasons behind, emerging into beauty and light. Their graceful flight brings a sense of freedom, hope, and new beginnings. Anyone who knows me knows my love for butterflies. Each one that visits feels like a gentle reminder, a gift from above, encouraging me to trust the journey.

For years I dreamed of creating a butterfly garden, and this year that dream became a reality. “Build it and they will come,” they say. My hope was to create an oasis—a safe and welcoming place to land. In many ways, that reflects how my husband and I strive to live our lives. We seek to create places where friends, family, and even strangers are warmly welcomed, deeply loved, and leave as strangers no more. Whether in our home, our gardens, or my paintings, I hope to offer a small sanctuary where beauty, peace, and wonder can flourish.

Monarch butterflies hold a special place in my heart, which is why I planted several varieties of milkweed—the only plant where monarchs lay their eggs and the caterpillars can feed. Monarchs east of the Rocky Mountains make one of the most extraordinary migrations on Earth, traveling more than 3,000 miles to the mountain forests of central Mexico. Late each summer, a remarkable “super generation” is born, living up to nine times longer than earlier generations so they can complete this incredible journey.
