Meandering
Overlooking Havasu Creek’s vibrant turquoise waters meandering through salmon-colored cliff walls was a delight to the senses. The cool water and terraced travertine pools beckoning us forward on our hike to explore her many waterfalls downstream. Clear waters tumble from one sparkling travertine pool to the next, nourishing rich vegetation along the way which has sustained the Havasupai people, “People of the Blue-Green Water,” for centuries.
It amazes me to find water this color in Arizona! While exploring, I learned it is so blue because of the travertine. Calcium carbonate and magnesium are naturally occurring in these waters, with the blue coming from the magnesium. As the pools deepen, the calcium carbonate is slowly released, creating a gorgeous blue that becomes more and more brilliant as the magnesium content increases. Contrasting against the red orange rocks of the canyon surrounding it, the intense beauty of this scene makes it an awe-inspiring experience like no other on earth.
