Wading Wild
Kayaking down the lower Salt River we have often been blessed observing the enchanting wild horses in their natural habitat. Each experience is a thrill to my senses. On a recent trip, my heart raced as they swam across the river just in front of us! Then as these majestic beauties reached the other side, they lingered wading in the cool water, one looked back at us as if saying hello!
Gorgeous blue green waters contrasted beautifully against their warm tones, the water lapping against them a melody. Watching these horses is an awe inspiring experience, a true gift. I’ve wanted to paint them for years and am thrilled to finally be capturing them, in a new series!
The iconic Salt River horses have roamed freely for centuries. They are also known as Mustangs and are believed to be descended from Spanish Colonial horses by early explorers and settlers.
The wild horses are protected by the Salt River Wild Horse Management Group who is dedicated to their humane management, which has allowed them to live peacefully over the years.
