Grand Adventure

Mooney Falls is perhaps the most impressive of the Havasupai waterfalls as the creek cascades straight over a 196 foot cliff! From the trailhead at Hualapai Hilltop, it’s a ten-mile hike each way to reach the overlook view of this spectacular waterfall, dropping into a deep, crystal clear, aqua blue pool. Grace and beauty, power and danger converge. Peeking over the edge was a stunning and exhilarating experience, especially knowing I would be scaling the cliff down to the bottom. Of course, I had no idea just how perilous that climb would be! It began with a set of tunnels cut into the bedrock, you had to turn around backwards and lower yourself with chains. Exiting the second tunnel the real fun began. I must admit my anxiety peaked at this point as you are lowering yourself straight over the edge of the cliff holding on to chains and ropes which are now slippery! And no, you are not tied off to anything. Fortunately, I had Richard behind me and another friend below me coaching me all the way down. My hands and legs shook searching out each long slippery foothold. Seeking this adventure? Make sure not to look down as you go, I made that mistake and almost froze.

What an incredible accomplishment making it down! Was rewarded by immediately looking up to see such a stunning sight, Mooney Falls thundering before you as the cool mist envelopes. I must say, I was quite proud of myself, this was way out of my comfort zone. Stepping out into cold, gorgeous water in this brilliant pool is irresistible, the lagoon is wide enough to swim out safely. Being November, I didn’t swim out but Richard and a handful of others did. This epic adventure was only halfway on the hike as we were to carry on to Beaver Falls. I couldn’t help but think I had to climb back up that cliff later in the day after many more miles… The adventure continued!
