This desert girl had never experienced the prolific explosion of hydrangea flowers surrounding me as I did when I arrived in Nantucket! Giant white “snowballs” cover one yard, then blues, purples, and pinks fill another, wow! I didn’t realize the variety of color you can find in a single bush. Hydrangeas are delicate and romantic, filling me with thoughts of love, happiness, and gratitude. Spiritually they also represent grace and beauty as well. I learned the variety I chose to paint is the “The Nantucket Blue”, a repeat bloomer that adorns houses on the island of Nantucket. Unlike most hydrangeas, this unique beauty blooms repeatedly throughout the growing season from early summer well into early fall. Dense green foliage provides contrast for an abundant summertime display of blue or pink flower clusters that last until frost. What a gift to visit in peak season!
