Come Sit Awhile

Richard and I began our grand Canadian and New England fall adventure in the loveliest town, Niagara-on-the-Lake. Strolling down Queen Street we were struck by the sheer beauty all around us, a tapestry of rich color and texture. Have I seen such stunning flowers and lush foliage before, hanging from the windows and streetlights, filling every planter and pot? I don’t think I have… what a delight even with overcast skies. So much color all around me I could hardly take it, I yearned for my paint brushes right then and there. Walking the streets was like stepping back in time passing the clock tower, visiting Canada’s oldest apothecary shop, and reading the plaques on all the historic buildings. These buildings were filled with galleries, unique shops and charming restaurants (even found some gelato!). Many come to enjoy world class theater, the Shaw Festival, along with the incredible wineries nearby, but I will save that for another painting story. As we strolled, I was especially captivated by the way the flowers framed the Shaw Café & Wine Bar, a Landmark of Niagara-on-the-Lake and knew this would be one of my first paintings. Later we spent some time at the park, giving me the idea for a companion painting with this inviting bench. We stayed just down the road at Lakewinds, a recently restored Victorian manor with fabulous gardens, hospitality, and breakfast experience. If only we could have stayed longer…
