The Greatest Gift
Years ago one of my best friends gave me a small figurine with Santa kneeling before baby Jesus. I take great pleasure each year in opening the box and displaying this in a special place where I will see it every day. I love it so much for what it symbolizes and give thanks each time I pass it for the miracle and the reminder as to what the holidays are really about for me. After this past Christmas was over and I began to wrap it up for yet another year I had the vision of my own painting capturing this experience, The Greatest Gift. My cousin was pregnant at the time and I asked her how she would feel about her baby as a model of Jesus for my painting. Of course when thinking of Santa, my mind was only filled with my Dad who lives Santa a couple months out of each year and what an awesome and cheerful Santa he is! In fact my daughter had just designed and created a Victorian Santa suit for him to wear. He was thrilled I asked him to pose for me as well, although no one was quite so thrilled I had them all out at Saguaro Ranch Park in the middle of an Arizona August to pose for me! I am so thankful for their help and for this painting coming together. I hope it has inspired you and caused you to remember what is important during the holidays, laying aside the rush and the stress. Now I will focus on creating my Christmas cards and prints to share from this painting!
