By the Light of the Moon
For some time now I have wanted to capture these beauties, the night blooming Cereus Peruvianus, to no avail. Moving to Carefree this cactus was a gift, from a very special friend, planted near my home. Not long after, I would go out each morning as they seemed just about to bloom. “You are missing them” my husband replied, you need to get out there earlier”. Now, I must admit, I have never really been a morning person and often make myself get up very early. Well this was reason enough. I arose, dressed in the dark, and was outside with my camera in hand just before dawn. What and incredible gift in these magical blooms as the sun was just beginning to peak over the horizon! I watched for some time as the bees danced from bloom to bloom entranced.
It’s amazes me these flowers only bloom each summer, by the light of the moon, and for one special night before they wither away as the sun touches them. If they are fortunate enough to be fertilized, then a luscious red fruit follows filled with seeds. Such incredible light in the darkness, for me a symbol of hope and beauty in the world around me. Rise early and catch these beauties, you will not be disappointed!
