Gethsemane – His Will

Gethsemane – His Will

Last week I finally stepped back into my studio ready to paint with a few more scenes from Greece swimming in my head yet I found I had none of the right canvas sizes to work with… really?! I cleaned my studio and pulled out Gethsemane from it’s hiding place and set it on my easel. This painting had been shoved in the corner this fall in frustration because it was just not “working”. I had a vision and I could not capture it. Yet all this time it pulled at the back of my mind, I could not let it go. As I sat their studying the painting I saw it in a new light and before I knew it I was painting once again. I changed my direction and modified it quite a bit until I was really feeling the emotional pull and vision I wanted to convey, a glimpse of what I felt as we stood there in the Garden on our Holy Land trip. Yes, it was working!

I realized while wrapping up for the day that I had forgotten about my daily reading and sat down to begin. Somehow it never registered that on this day I would enter the Garden once again through these words on the pages before me.

Mark 14 & Luke 22

They went to a place called Gethsemane, and Jesus said to his disciples, “Sit here while I pray.” He took Peter, James and John along with him, and he began to be deeply distressed and troubled. “My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death,” he said to them. “Stay here and keep watch.” Going a little farther, he fell to the ground and prayed that if possible the hour might pass from him. “Abba, Father,” he said, “everything is possible for you. Take this cup from me. Yet not what I will, but what you will.” An angel from heaven appeared and strengthened Him. And being in anguish he prayed more earnestly, and his sweat was like drops of blood falling to the ground. Then he returned to his disciples and found them sleeping. “Simon,” he said to Peter, “are you asleep? Couldn’t you keep watch for one hour? Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.” Once more he went away and prayed the same thing. When he came back, he again found them sleeping, because their eyes were heavy. They did not know what to say to him. Returning the third time, he said to them, “Are you still sleeping and resting? Enough! The hour has come. Look, the Son of Man is delivered into the hands of sinners. Rise! Let us go! Here comes my betrayer!”

Jesus understood the suffering he was about to encounter and yet he willingly chose the will of His Father, who had a plan to reconcile each of us to him.

I am often amazed at His perfect timing in all things. I knew I was supposed to paint this experience and continued to struggle with it, trying to force it. Yet on this day, with no intention of looking at the painting at all, there it was and now it flowed. Then I went in and read the reading for this day in the Garden, WOW. So clearly now was the right time and the right way, I pray you are moved by what you see, Amen.
