Believe
Cruising into the port at Mykonos, Greece just after sunrise was spectacular as the sunlight bathed the white buildings with warm light and the blue domes and front doors seemed to cheerfully welcome us ashore. Mykonos is one of the most popular Greek isles to visit and in Greek mythology it is said that both Hercules and Poseidon had a hand in destroying some of the Giants that opposed Zeus on this very island. It is later rumored to have then be named in honor of Apollo’s grandson Mykons. What to do in this beautiful place in such a short period of time? Three of us couples decided to rent scooters and explore the island seeing as much of its scenic beauty as we could. We explored pristine beaches, white washed buildings, and rocky cliffs as the sun shined brightly and the breeze gently blew. At one point cruising along last in the line, Richard and I broke down and no one noticed! Really!? Sitting on the road for some time waiting to be rescued we chose not to be upset and to laugh about it, it’s an adventure right? Finally back on the road we found one of the couples who also was separated and joined them for a delicious and authentic Greek lunch. We then decided to explore another side of the island and came across the most beautiful setting of rocky coastline, lush greenery and crystal clear blue-green waters, along with a stunning white domed Greek church.
Funny how sometimes the delays or setbacks in life lead you to just where you are supposed to be. What a gift to stand here and breathe in this moment, this scene, oh how I wish we had more time to spend, to immerse ourselves, to walk on the beach with my toes in the water, to step inside of this church. What was it like in there? I pray this church and her people are “alive” and active within their community, their island, a shining beacon of hope reaching out helping others and encouraging those around them to “Believe”. I chose to paint two scenes capturing this experience, Exploring Mykonos and Believe.
