Anticipation
The Cinque Terre (The Five Lands) is a rugged stretch of coastline and some of the most uncontaminated areas in the Mediterranean Sea. Riomaggiore, Corniglia, Manarola, Vernazza, and Monterosso are the villages and are suspended on sheer cliffs overlooking the ocean. Paths, trains and boats connect the villages, and cars cannot reach it from the outside. The vineyards, winding paths, beautiful beaches between cliffs and clear waters are some of the wonderful sights to experience. The tiny town of Manarola, built 70 meters above the sea, is an amazing sight as the village is all ups and downs, with steep narrow alleyways. The tiny harbor at Manarola features a boat ramp, multi-colored houses, a tiny piazza with restaurants and the town’s swimming hole. Although there is no real beach here, it has some of the best deep-water swimming around. As we walked into town we were struck by the quaint beauty of village. We had a wonderful lunch of homemade pasta and local wines and then walked down to view the sea. We were quite surprised to learn how they launched the boats as we stood watching this particular one being hoisted over the edge and lowered down into the water. It was so interesting watching its progress and then the owner and his young son jump aboard excitedly and head out into the sparkling blue green waters.
