In the Garden
Exploring the grounds of the Willburton Inn in Manchester, VT we found one statue after another. We soon learned the owner was an avid art collector with pieces that spanned across the years and genres carefully placed throughout the gardens, including the indoor spaces. For some reason I kept being drawn back to this one. Was it the sensuous curves of the woman in the garden, the way her aged color contrasted against the fall foliage? Was it the way her and the surroundings changed each time I looked at different times of day from full sun to overcast? Yes, it was this and more… My thoughts drifted as I photographed her and later began to paint. “Naked and unashamed” danced through my mind, Eve in the garden from Genesis 2:25. Often as a landscape painter I see the divine all around me, the magic light of a fleeting sunset, a gentle rain in the forest before me, ocean waves that lap at my feet. Here today I marveled also at the creation of feminine beauty.
Her statue was only a few feet tall but the way I “envisioned” her was much larger so that is the way I chose to paint her. I wasn’t able to track down the artist or title of the piece. If you know, please share it with me.
