Rare Find

Setting out on foot, chasing wildflowers after our recent snow, I had no idea what a treat I was in for. Perched on a hill, off the dirt road to Roosevelt lake, an elusive and beautiful crested Saguaro cactus was spotted. These rare beauties are a mystery of mother nature. The first one I had ever seen was while visiting the Desert Botanical Garden in Arizona. However, this special one was so much more exciting, stumbling upon her out in the wild!

Biologists disagree on what causes this rare mutation in Saguaros. Some speculate a genetic mutation or a hormone imbalance, causing the number of pleats to grow out of control. Others suggest it is caused by frost damage or lightning strikes. Whatever the cause, I am content with enjoying the mystery, joyful to experience the beauty of her set among the wildflowers.
