Winter Wonderland

Winter Wonderland

The snow lays thick on the pine boughs as the dense clouds pause for the morning light. Dawn has come and the sun reaches through the trees lighting a way through the darkness, one that sparkles and beckons me forward. Subtle oranges, pinks, and yellows light up the snow drifts and branches as the light caresses this winter wonderland. I wrap my blanket snugly around me and enjoy a fresh cup of coffee in this brisk mountain air. Time seems to slow as I watch the light shift from tree to tree while the forest awakens with a fresh blanket of snow. I hear birdsong now and watch the squirrels emerge to forage, I just love the sights and sounds of the forest. My mind slowly shifts to another cabin long ago… I remember my brother and I awakening as children to an overnight snow much like the one before me. We quickly bundled up and headed out, pulling our jacket hoods up tight and stood under the trees with the thickest snow resting on them shaking as hard as we could causing the snow to tumble down upon us. I laugh all over again remembering this precious time with my brother, not a care in the world. Time passes much too quickly these days, I am thankful for the moment and the memory, along with the reminder to slow down and appreciate each little gift in life, including him.
