OlerdolaOur adventures in Spain continued with a private tour by the owner of our B&B and an artist himself. We visited the incredible National Art Museum of Catalonia and then on to the Montjuic Castle, learning the history and exploring the grounds. From here we went to visit the old castle ruins of Olerdola on the hill of San Miguel. It dated back 4000 years and was on a strategic, naturally elevated rock plateau and fortress, from the bronze age through the Middle Ages. Towards the end of the second century BC, the Romans established a military camp to control the region. They erected a castle and a church dedicated to St. Michael, in the Romanesque style. Later the fortress was occupied by Christians, then by the Moors, and then it became a boundary between the two.

I loved this place, exploring the old walls and cistern, walking where so many have passed before me, even fought and died there. It was a surreal experience, imagining what life was like for each. Making our way towards the ancient Romanesque church at the top I took time to enjoy these incredible rough stairs, carved with age, so many layers etching each stone, and covered here and there with lichen. Slowly we were drawn up and into the church walls exploring every inch of her. I take a moment to look up and say thank you deeply, for this experience and for SO much more…
