The Cinque Terre (The Five Lands) is a rugged stretch of coastline and some of the most uncontaminated areas in the Mediterranean Sea. Riomaggiore, Corniglia, Manarola, Vernazza, and Monterosso are the villages and are suspended on sheer cliffs overlooking the ocean. Paths, trains and boats connect the villages, and cars cannot reach it from the outside. The vineyards, winding paths, beautiful beaches between cliffs and clear waters are some of the wonderful sights to experience. The tiny town of Manarola, built 70 meters above the sea, is an amazing sight as the village is all ups and downs, with steep narrow alleyways. The tiny harbor at Manarola features a boat ramp, multi-colored houses, a small piazza with restaurants and the town’s swimming hole. Although there is no real beach here, it has some of the best deep-water swimming around. As we walked into town we were struck by the quaint beauty of village. We had a wonderful lunch of homemade pasta and local wines and then walked down to view the sea. We were quite surprised to learn how they launched the boats as we stood watching them hoist each over the edge and lower it down into the water (see my painting Anticipation). We then climbed down and around to jump in the swimming hole ourselves and lay out on the large concrete steps! Breathtaking!!
